We learned a valuable lesson this quarter about how to simultaneously grow closer as employees and give back to our communities.
Each quarter, our fearless leaders create a theme (with incentives) to drive internal success across all our departments. In Q1 of this year, our theme was ‘Team Sholo Gives Back’ and the incentive was $5000 donated to a charity of choice for the winning team at the end of Q1.
First, we were polled on our top 5 causes – what pulls at our heartstrings the most and what we feel most passionate about. From the responses, we were divided into 4 teams:
KidDriven – Dedicated to helping children (hunger, illness, abuse, and more)
Sholong Cancer – Dedicated to the fight against cancer
Planeteers – Dedicated to helping our environment
Sherlock Homes – Dedicated to helping the homeless
A points system was created and we all got busy making points for our teams. Each team came up with their team name and some teams even created fancy logos, while others remained more low profile and ever so stealthily helped their teams rise to the top. What we all shared was a passion for doing all we could to propel our teams forward and get closer to the final $5000 prize for a charity of our choice.
Over Q1, we logged in 51 monetary donations (totalling hundreds of dollars) and 6 community service events across our spectrum of causes.
At the end of Q1, it was the Sherlock Homes team that pulled out the win. They decided to split the $5000 between two charities in two different states that are home to many of our employees:
Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers serve over 1,200 homeless and needy men, women, and children every day. The goal is to help each one become successful in life and have a personal relationship with God.
Covenant House (Utah) helps homeless kids with shelter, food, life skills, medical care. Donations through April are being tripled during this fundraising campaign, so our $2500 had a $7500 impact!
I think I can speak for all of us when I say we all won in some way. Not only were we inspired to up our charitable giving across the country, donating time and money to local causes we’re passionate about, but we were also reminded of how fortunate we are to be employed, have roofs over our heads and food in our bellies.
Not least of all, it gave me pause on the importance of “family” and all the many forms families can take–whether connected by blood, love, adoption, friendship or even a company we all work for and believe in. I am proud to be part of the Showroom Logic family and will continue to step up my charitable giving well beyond Q1 of 2017.
If you’re looking for ways to inspire your own employees, I would suggest inspiring them to “win” by giving back to their own communities. Afterall…
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
